In the 1980s, a group of law students at the University of Amsterdam noticed that many citizens were slipping through the cracks of the legal system. Their problems were often too minor for lawyers to take on, yet too complex to resolve without legal knowledge. To bridge this gap, they founded Stichting Wetwinkel Amsterdam on 9 September 1985. Since then, the Wetwinkel has been run by a team of around fifteen dedicated law students who volunteer their time to help anyone facing a legal issue. Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, they provide free legal advice and guidance to those who need it most.

Even today, many people still find it difficult to navigate the legal system on their own. The Legal Aid Centre continues to offer support to anyone seeking legal assistance, staying true to the mission that inspired its founders nearly forty years ago.
